Attorney General Lynch: Use-of-Force Data is Vital for Transparency and Accountability

In a press conference held at the U.S. Department of Justice, Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch reinforced the need for national, consistent data on law enforcement interactions with the communities they serve, especially with data collection on the use of force.  The Attorney General noted that the department has already taken steps to improve the accuracy and consistency of use-of-force data from law enforcement. Currently, federal authorities publish annual figures on the number of “justifiable homicides” by law enforcement.  But this reporting is voluntary and not all police departments participate, causing the figures to be incomplete. This lack of information is what has prompted the Department of Justice and the Obama Administration to work with law enforcement to improve the process.

Launching Nationwide Officer Safety Event Deconfliction

To further expand officer safety event deconfliction coverage nationwide, the Bureau of Justice Assistance launched the National Criminal Intelligence Resource Center’s Deconfliction Web site, in collaboration with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA), the Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) Program, and the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC), and in partnership with the Office of the Program Manager for the Information Sharing Environment. The site is the first nationwide officer safety event deconfliction solution, and it was developed by integrating HIDTA’s Case Explorer, SAFETNet systems, and RISS’s RISSafe system. This is a significant milestone in enhancing officer safety throughout the country.

U.S. Department Of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services Awards More Than $107 Million to Hire Community Policing Officers

Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch has announced that more than $107 million in grant funding through the Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) will go to the COPS Hiring Program (CHP). The Attorney General announced funding awards to nearly 200 law enforcement agencies across the nation, aimed at creating, and in some cases protecting, 866 law enforcement positions.

$7.5 Million Communications Upgrade Will Strengthen Local Law Enforcement

Oneida County in New York will use a state grant and county bond funding to help pay for a major $7.5 million upgrade to its emergency communications system. The project will replace the radio systems used by the Utica and Rome police and fire departments and New Hartford Police Department. Utica and New Hartford currently work on the same system that allows first responders to communicate with each other. Rome has its own system, making communication across these departments difficult. Sheriff's deputies and state police communicate over a common frequency, along with other law enforcement agencies in the county. The new systems will offer better coverage, signal strength, and channels to allow law enforcement to communicate with other agencies across county and state lines.

DOJ Gives $23 Million to Help Local Law Enforcement Buy Body Cameras

Attorney General Loretta Lynch recently announced that body-worn camera funding will be given in the form of federal grants to 73 local and tribal agencies. The grants, which will be awarded by the department’s Office of Justice Programs and require a 50/50 in-kind or cash match, will require each agency to establish a strong implementation plan and training policy before purchasing the actual cameras as well as develop a long-term plan for storing the devices.
