XQuery 1.0: An XML Query Language [W3C Working Draft 16 August 2002]

This specification describes a query language, XQuery, which is designed to be broadly applicable across many types of XML data sources (e.g., structured/semi- structured documents, relational databases, object repositories) whether physically stored in XML or viewed as XML via middleware. To allow intelligent query across all types of data, whether physically stored in XML or viewed as XML via middleware, or whether in a relational database or an object repository.
Other Standards: This specification uses the structure of XML as a starting point.
