Web Site Link: http://www.nyc.gov/html/prob/html/programs/document_downloads.shtml

A Pre-Sentence Investigation (PSI) is a legal term referring to the investigation into the history of person convicted of a crime before sentencing to determine if there are extenuating circumstances, which should ameliorate the sentence, or a history of criminal behavior to increase the harshness of the sentence. One of the major tasks of Department of Probation is to prepare a Pre-Sentence Investigation report when court orders an investigation following an arrest in response of crime committed by an Adult Defendant. Probation officers investigate by interviewing victims, defendant, co-defendants, arresting officer and different collateral contacts and also by reviewing various documents obtained from multiple sources. Pre-Sentence Investigation report is prepared in pre-defined format collating all the information collected from these sources. The report is primarily meant to help the court determine an appropriate sentence apart from creating an elaborate information repository that can be made readily available to different law enforcement agencies as and when needed.
